How to become an Artist : Overview
If you want to become an artist, chances are you already know you're artistic - but perhaps you just aren't sure how to turn your creativity into an art career.
Artistic alternatives
Some artists work for commercial art studios. Others work for themselves. Commercial artists and illustrators work for publishers, ad agencies, and design firms--or sell to them freelance. There are benefits to both commercial and self employment. If you're employed, you'll have a 9 to 5 job. If you work for yourself, you'll set your own hours.
Training to become an artist
Artists can pursue a bachelor's degree (BFA) at a university or art school. Some go on to get the Master in Fine Arts (MFA) degree. Most art classes are hands-on studio classes, though the best schools will also educate you in the business of art.
Unique art careers
Though their median salaries are low, artists enjoy the creativity. All art careers come down to reputation. If you do good work--and if you get that work noticed--you'll have a career. Marketing and promotion is absolutely essential, especially if you're self-employed in the arts.
